I have learned much on Sir Davids life and works in the tree Vol. work ‘Lives of the Lindsays’ by Lord Lindsay 1858. I belive it was here that I read a family bit about a comment that James V made to his old friend and tutor, after a prodution of ‘The Three Estates’ at Linlithgow. “Only you Davie, Only you!” I take this to mean that anyone else makeing these arguments and jests at the Three Estates would be in prison or worse.

Thank you for the best interview on my uncle of lines great play. It is sometimes quoted from, here in the US, but rarely if ever performed. I love the the lines almost at the end, “Now let ilk man his way advance! Let some ga drink and sone ga dance! Let the Minstrels blaw up a brawl of France! Let see wha hobbles best!” I think this might be a summery of the very ideas put forth in the play.

I really enjoyed your verbal study of my uncle of line, David Lyndsay Lord Lyon, and his play. One thing that I noticed was in the conversation on “What is ane King”, the term was used “King of Scotland”. The correct term for Scotlands Royal is ‘King of Scots’. This is a very different concept than King of England.

A very interesting video. I have studied this very scene in a Scottish Literature course at Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) taught by Professor John Corbett. It is great to be able to see a staging of it. Congratulations!

It is wonderful to see this play being performed. I have only ever seen a student production when I was at Edinburgh University. Please tell me it is going on tour so that many more people can see it!

The first performance was a tour-de-force, full of gutsy comedy and sharp political and social satire. It is forty odd years since I have seen the play and the effect of it in performance is electrifying. In particular I cannot believe that Lyndsay was anything but a fore-runner of the 1832 reform bill, one might even say the suffragettes, except that he was not arguing for anything other than the commonweal. However he had the proposal approved that all bishops and abbots should be dispensed with, and there was a ‘modern’ sermon preached, perhaps based on what was actually being preached in reforming circles in Scotland in the early 1550s. This is hardly the writing of a fence-sitter!

A wonderful day, in all, with excellent weather, even a bit too sunny perhaps.

I was at the Dress Rehearsal yesterday…of A SATIRE OF THE THREE ESTATES & THE INTERLUDE
This is a Magnificent Experience to witness the thoughts of a 16th Century playwright which ring true today. The words and meaning of this play are given to the audience by way of fondness and kindness. Tho’ we sit in rapture for near on 5 hours , the performers in their strength of professionalisim gather us into the play. Go and see this , or see the recording which will come later…I am honoured to now, know where the root of ” The Sense of Worth” of all, first was expressed in our Culture .
